Flexibility at Scale: A Look Inside Wellington IT’s New API Gateway
At this year’s cuEngage Live, one of the most forward-looking breakout sessions was Flexibility at Scale: Introducing Our API Gateway for Smarter Connections. Delivered by Wellington IT’s Scott Burnside (Head of Engineering) and Dovydas Pliauga (Senior Cloud Engineer), the session pulled back the curtain on the powerful infrastructure behind their new API Gateway and what it means for Credit Unions
What Even Is an API?
For those less familiar, the session began with a helpful refresher: APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are the technology that allows different systems to ‘talk’ to one another. Whether a member is checking their balance, submitting a loan application or updating their address, APIs are working in the background to make it happen securely and automatically.
In fact, Credit Unions are already using APIs in more ways than many realise. Wellington IT currently supports over 100 API endpoints, powering seamless integration with third-party tools and enabling real-time services for members.
Why Build an API Gateway?
As the number of integrations across the ecosystem grows, so does complexity. The API Gateway was designed as a secure, scalable, cloud-native solution that enables faster onboarding, consistent experiences, and resilience. Built on AWS using a serverless architecture, it’s designed to grow with credit unions and the evolving demands of their digital services.
Key benefits include:
- Security – robust access controls, encryption and traffic monitoring
- Resilience – always-on infrastructure with no-downtime updates
- Flexibility – support for real-world business actions such as creating, retrieving, updating or deleting member data, loans, and consents
- Speed – quicker setup and simpler ongoing management of integrations
Real-World Use Cases
One of the most engaging parts of the session was a live audience poll inviting attendees to vote on which use case Wellington IT should walk through. Options included:
- 360° Member View – a single CRM-style interface showing all member data
- Consent-Based Marketing Tool – only show promotions to opted-in members
- Card & Payment Monitoring Dashboard – real-time transaction insights
- Onboarding Portal – let prospective members apply before they join
Each of these examples highlighted how the Gateway enables smarter, more personalised member experiences while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
What's Next?
The API Gateway (v1) is already live and delivering value. But development doesn’t stop there:
- Push data endpoints are currently being rolled out
- Webhooks for real-time notifications are next on the roadmap
- A dedicated Developer Centre will support external partners
Final Thoughts
The API Gateway represents more than just a technical upgrade — it’s a strategic shift toward openness, agility and member-first innovation. As Credit Unions continue to adapt and evolve in a digital-first world, tools like this will help unlock smarter connections across systems, services and people.
